Foundational Scriptures – Why We Do What We Do

By Scott MacLeod
Here is a list of Scriptures that have been foundational and inspirational in launching and sustaining the ministry of Provision International. Provision was not generated by good ideas, good deeds or even humanitarian sympathies, but by the mission and mandate that is clearly articulated for us in the Word of God.
Only the Word of God could have shaken us loose from our mostly selfish lifestyle and loosed us from “security” of careers and self-preservation and propelled us into serving the poor. Only the words of God can motivate and animate us to sacrifice and serve the poor and the lost and the children with sustained joy and vigor. So here is a list of some of the most impacting scriptures that have shaped our values and vision. This list is not all inclusive as the Bible has almost 3000 scriptures that deal with the poor, widows and orphans.
These great and challenging scriptures are the fuel to our fire and have helped us navigate through many years, fears and nations. I am so thankful that we serve a God who is the defender of the fatherless and widows, who is abounding in love and full of compassion, who loves justice and who is rich in mercy. He is a God who welcomes the poorest of the poor and the children, a God who leaves no one out. To Him is the glory forever!
May these scriptures inspire, refire, encourage and challenge you (as they have us) to be a blessing to the poor, a defender of the weak and a liberator of the lost.
